LTO drive unearths PH-wide hundreds of overloaded vehicles

Jose Arturo “Jay Art” Tugade, the recently appointed chief assistant secretary, has increased the Land Transportation Office’s (LTO) anti-truck overloading activities across the nation.

According to a statement released by the LTO on Thursday, 54 out of 142 trucks were flagged for overloading during anti-truck overloading mobile enforcement (ATOME) efforts conducted by the National Capital Region (NCR)-West and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

It stated that Republic Act 8794, also known as the Motor Vehicle User’s Charge Law, was vigorously enforced in order to sustain the country’s national and provincial roadways’ viability.

More than 120 out of 180 trucks in Central Luzon were overcrowded, and comparable operations were out by LTO Region 5 (Bicol) in Polangui, Albay, flagged 11 out of 37 trucks.

Three shifts of joint LTO-DPWH staff worked at the DPWH Weighbridge Station in Santa Rita, Samar, to carry out ATOME operations for LTO Region 8 (Eastern Visayas).

Three vehicles were found to be overloaded out of the 23 that were examined in LTO Region 10 (Northern Mindanao) at the Amoros Weighbridge station in El Salvador City, Misamis Oriental.

All offenders received temporary operator’s permits, and the trucks’ driver’s licenses were taken away, according to the statement.

Tugade underlined that, in addition to harming the infrastructure, heavy trucks are also risky for motorists.

“Overloading vehicles to enable the delivery of more items to more locations is not an acceptable justification. It’s time to stop this long-standing custom. I’ll make sure that the LTO’s anti-overloading efforts don’t stop, he promised.
