Be your “best version” like Bonifacio, the PBBM exhorts Filipinos to be.
On Wednesday, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. urged Filipinos to emulate Andres Bonifacio’s bravery by developing into their “best selves” and embracing their nation’s principles of patriotism and sacrifice.
In a speech given at the celebration of Bonifacio’s 159th birthday in Caloocan City, Marcos claimed that by modeling the revolutionary hero’s virtues, all Filipinos would be able to look forward to a “brighter” future.
He declared, “His name will forever be carved in history, not only because he led the revolution but also because of his bravery and patriotism. Ang kaniyang (Bonifacio) pangalan ay mananatiling naka-ukit sa ating kasaysayan kailanman.”
Kaya naman sikapin natin na maging pinakamahusay na uri ng ating mga sarili, na maging Pilipino na ang katapatan at pagmamahal sa bayan ay kaparis ng ating mga bayani tulad ni Gat Andres (So, let us do our best to become the greatest versions of
The President praised Bonifacio for his courage in standing up to foreign oppressors and fighting for the Philippines’ freedom while acknowledging his contributions to and sacrifices made for the benefit of the Filipino people and the country.
He declared that Filipinos must cooperate in order to achieve their aspiration of a “peaceful, free, and abundant” country.
“Responsible and law-abiding” citizens
In order for the Filipino people to have a “brighter and freer” future, Marcos urged them to be “dutiful and law-abiding” citizens.
In his statement commemorating Bonifacio’s 159th birthday, he urged his fellow Filipinos to “remember Bonifacio’s life of extraordinary selflessness by becoming diligent and law-abiding citizens who would contribute towards a greater and freer future for all Filipinos.”
While the people of the Philippines are currently enjoying their freedom, Marcos urged them to remain alert in defending the nation from “social ills and other elements that endanger our liberties.”
“As we celebrate Gat Andres Bonifacio’s birth anniversary, we cherish the liberties we enjoy even more today. His soul endures in the tales we narrate and employ to further his legacy, giving his words new life through our feeling of duty and patriotism.
According to him, “our brave forebears were able to muster the will and the courage to battle their oppressors, so opening the path to our motherland’s eventual freedom,” because of the “bold principles of the Father of the Philippine Revolution.”
The nation would continue to prosper, according to Marcos, with the assistance of “modern-day heroes” such as medical professionals, nurses, government employees, and expatriate Filipino workers.
“While we continue to encounter problems in current times, may Bonifacio and our past and present heroes encourage us to accomplish our aims,” he added.
Marcos presided over the ceremony to raise the flag and lay a wreath at the Bonifacio Monument in Caloocan City to commemorate the 159th anniversary of Bonifacio’s birth.
As the nation’s leader, Marcos was present for the first time at the memorial services.
Let Duterte be motivated by Bonifacio’s patriotic spirit.
Sara Duterte, vice president, joined the country in honoring Bonifacio’s bravery and valor.
In a statement made public on Wednesday, Duterte urged Filipinos to draw strength from Bonifacio’s great passion for the country and to stick together as the country faces and surmounts challenges on the way to realizing its dream for a better life for all.
We are ushering in a future that will be strongly forged by our unwavering solidarity and our own acts of selflessness, courage, and bravery for our nation and our fellow Filipinos, she said. “May the fire he (Bonifacio) started in the name of freedom rekindle a deep sense of patriotism among us,” she said.
DND: Show courage like Bonifacio did
In honoring the birth of Bonifacio, commonly referred to as the nation’s “Great Plebeian,” the Department of National Defense (DND) joined the general public.
Undersecretary Jose Faustino Jr., the DND official in charge, asked all Filipinos in his speech to follow the example of the hero by rising to the difficulties facing this generation with courage and greatness.
Our period provides fresh difficulties that call for the same enthusiasm, honesty, and greatness to preserve and protect our country’s peace and stability, he said. “We may no longer be a country that grapples with the struggles we faced during the time of our great heroes,” he said.
All Filipinos were also urged by Faustino to keep up their efforts for the development of the country.
“Let us love our country like the love exhibited and demonstrated by Gat Andres Bonifacio,” he said. “Mahalin natin ang ating bayan, gaya ng pagmamahal na isinabuhay ni Gat Andres Bonifacio.”
The head of DND praised Bonifacio’s tenacity and commitment to the cause of the nation’s liberty.
“For him, making the ultimate sacrifice for the benefit and salvation of one’s country is the pinnacle of honor and happiness. The Father of Katipunan’s heroic deeds and unrivaled patriotism continue to resonate in our national psyche more than a century after his passing, according to Faustino.
He continued by saying that Bonifacio’s contributions and the fact that he ignited the Philippine revolution inspired and fueled subsequent generations of Filipinos to struggle for “a nation that is free from the chains of ages past.”
Along with other Filipinos, Lt. Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr., commander of the Philippine Army (PA), observed Bonifacio’s 159th birthday.
The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) served as the ceremony’s master of ceremonies, and simultaneous flag-raising and wreath-laying rituals were held all around the nation.
Along with Faustino and Lt. Gen. Bartolome Vicente Bacarro, who is the chief of staff of the Philippine Armed Forces, Marcos presided over the ceremony.
While this was going on, Brawner was represented at the wreath-laying ceremony at the Andres Bonifacio Monument at the Philippine Army Headquarters in Fort Bonifacio by PA vice commander Maj. Gen. Adonis R. Bajao.
Gat Andres Bonifacio’s descendant Mary Rose N. Distrito attended the wreath-laying ceremony at Fort Bonifacio.
Amenah Pangandaman, the budget secretary, joined the entire country in honoring Bonifacio’s birthday in a statement. She said the event serves as a “timely reminder” of the revolutionary leader’s efforts to free the nation “from the shackles of poverty and injustice.”
According to Pangandaman, the current administration is dedicated to bettering the lives of Filipinos in the spirit of Bonifacio.
“The Philippine government similarly remains committed to enhancing the lives of every Filipino,” she stated. “The Great Plebeian’s war against societal problems remains a challenge today.”
For its part, the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) “strictly adheres to the Marcos Jr. administration’s eight-point socioeconomic agenda, wherein programs dedicated to food security, better transportation, affordable and clean energy, health care, social services, education, bureaucratic efficiency, and sound fiscal management are given priorities to ensure that no Filipino will be left behind.”
The theme for this year’s festivities is “Bonifacio 2022: Kabayanihan at Pagtindig sa Makabagong Panahon.”
On November 30, 1863, Bonifacioโknown as the “Father of the Philippine Revolution”โwas born in Tondo, Manila.
Since Bonifacio was murdered by his own Filipinos rather than by Spanish colonists, unlike other national heroes, he is honored on his birthday rather than the anniversary of his passing.
The “Kataas-taasang, Kagalang-galangang Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan,” or “Katipunan,” was a clandestine revolutionary group that fought for the independence of the Philippines from Spain. Bonifacio was one of its founders.
He was forced to relinquish his position as “Supremo” (Supreme Leader) of the Katipunan in 1897 in favor of Emilio Aguinaldo.
On May 10, 1897, he was put to death by his fellow Katipuneros after Aguinaldo accused him of treason.
