The government of Marcos is devoted to defending journalists’ rights

The Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFoMS) said on Wednesday that the Marcos administration places a high priority on the security and welfare of the nation’s media professionals.

The promise was made during Perry Solis’ recent attendance at the 33rd session of the Intergovernmental Council of the International Programme for the Development of Communication as the officer in charge of the PTFoMS (IPDC).

The Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFoMS) issued a statement that read, “The Administration of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has assured the international community of the government’s unwavering commitment to safeguard media freedom and to protect the rights and safety of journalists in the Philippines.”

The Marcos Administration stated that the “safety of all journalists and media workers in the Philippines is a major priority.”

The two-day event, held from November 24 to 25, was organized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) with the goal of advancing mass media in developing nations.

The IPDC is the only UN multilateral forum dedicated to encouraging the global community to support media initiatives for the expansion of a free and pluralistic press.

Through the combined efforts of the Department of Foreign Affairs, the UNESCO National Commission of the Philippines, the Permanent Delegation of the Philippines to UNESCO, and the PTFoMS, the Philippines has been chosen by the UNESCO General Conference as a member of the IPDC Intergovernmental Council for the term 2021–2025.

The PTFoMS claimed that the Philippines’ direct involvement and membership in the 39-member IPDC Intergovernmental Council presents a “wonderful chance” to influence the council’s viewpoint on the situation of press freedom in the country at the moment.

Given that the nation has “strong executive, legislative, and judicial institutions” to protect human rights, the task group said that Solis’ participation in the just-finished conference will be advantageous to the nation.

The statement read, “Being a member of the council has offered an ideal and rare opportunity to exhibit to the international community the free and dynamic media in the Philippines and the ongoing, sincere efforts of the Marcos Administration to protect the safety and security of media workers.”

Supporting media independence and pluralism are some of the IPDC’s top priorities, as are promoting journalists’ safety, law reform that supports media independence, conducting media assessments and research based on UNESCO-established indicators, and enhancing the skills of journalists and media managers.

The PTFoMS highlighted that several of these projects had benefited the Philippines.

Member nations of the IPDC Council made decisions about the protection of journalists, the rights to access information, and the growth of the media during its biennial session.

In a recent speech before the Manila Overseas Press Club on October 5, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. made a commitment to uphold and defend media rights.
