President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s first state visit to China from January 4 to 5, according to a representative of the Federation of Filipino Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (FFCCCII), was a “very significant” step toward strengthening diplomatic ties between China and the Philippines, which were formally established during the administration of his father, the late President Ferdinand E. Marcos Sr.

Lily Lim, deputy head of the FFCCCII Media and Public Information Affairs Committee, stated that ever since the late Premier Zhou Enlai and Ferdinand Marcos Sr. signed a Joint Communiqué in June 1975, bilateral relations between the two countries have strengthened.

“President Marcos Jr. is making his first state visit in 2023, soon after the start of the new year. Additionally, it improves ties between the Philippines and China. Because it celebrates the ongoing cooperation between the two countries since President Marcos Sr. established formal diplomatic ties with China in 1975. According to Lim, the three-day state visit would increase bilateral collaboration through agreements in a variety of sectors, including tourism, infrastructure, agriculture, and development cooperation.

She claimed that in order to encourage foreign investment, the FFCCCII worked closely with the Department of Trade and Industry and the Philippine Economic Zone Authority.

“Jobs will be produced by foreign investment. We have a lot of land area in the country, and we’ve enhanced our agriculture and technology as well as marketing and other factors to keep agriculture at the forefront. Because agriculture meets our nation’s fundamental needs, “She stated.

Marcos has emphasized the significance of fostering more trust and cooperation with China and other countries for sustainable development and economic progress.

“Because we observed the signing of 14 memoranda of agreement, this will immediately result in more money for our nation and more jobs for our people,” he continued.

During his state visit to China, Marcos obtained investment promises worth USD 22.8 billion from Chinese investors.

Along with these commitments, Marcos and Xi also decided to build a “direct communications channel” in the West Philippine Sea for issues relating to the South China Sea to avoid any misunderstandings between the two nations.

In addition, he swore that the nation will value connections between the Philippines and China even more so than it had forty years earlier.

China was the destination of Marcos’ first official travel to an Asian nation outside the ASEAN.
