SRA creates a 450,000,000 metric ton sugar import strategy.
The Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) said on Wednesday that it had written its recommendation for the import of roughly 450,000 metric tons of sugar.
Pablo Luiz Azcona, a member of the SRA Board, stated in a radio interview that they are constantly working with stakeholders to debate the suggested import plan.
He remarked in a combination of English and Filipino, “We already drafted our recommendations to Malacaang, and then we are just expecting instructions from the Malacaang if our proposals or recommendations are alright.
“โฆyun yung estimate 450,000 (metric tons) imports. But according to the calculation, the inflow of goods includes the president’s buffered gusto. But the President’s (Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.) wishes are included in the importation, including the buffer [stock]),” he continued.
Azcona stated that even domestic or retail use would be permitted for this desired import volume.
The president of our country is very pro-farmers. Okay, for retail, magpasok tayo ng asukal. Thus, the consumer is talagang makikinabang. According to the president’s timetable, who is actually pro-farmers, “Pag tama naman po ‘yung schedule na ginawa ng farmer,” Okay, let’s permit the retail introduction of sugar. Therefore, customers will actually profit. The farmers wouldn’t notice if the president created a good schedule, he added.
Even industrial organizations can purchase supplies for the consumer market, and farmers can benefit from optimal import timing given that their milling season runs from October through May.
‘Yung hinihingi lang parati ng farmer, kung pwede ‘yung dating po ng asukal is after milling na po (What the farmers are frequently asking is if the sugar must-arrive can be after the milling), after harvest,’ said the planter representative. ‘As a planter representative, our farmers, they are never against importation,’ he added.
The SRA has currently estimated that regional farmers can produce up to 1.813 million metric tons of sugar this year.
high cost of input
The prior importation of 150,000 metric tons of sugar has also been finished, according to the SRA.
Azcona responded that the SRA has no control over businesspeople when asked if the anticipated importation would assist lower market prices.
“Even if the farmgate price is PHP60 per kilogram and the retail price is in the range of PHP90 to PHP100, the SRA can do nothing,” he said.
He did point out that a PHP60 farm-gate price provides compensation to farmers who have been hurt by the high input costs.
“Are the local farmers satisfied with their PHP60 income, po? As opposed to the previous year, farmers’ costs are higher this year. (Why are farmers OK with PHP60/kg? due to the fact that farmers’ [input] costs are so high in comparison to the previous year). I believe it is all petroleum-based because of this, he remarked.
After the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, fuel prices doubled and fertilizer prices tripled for farmers.
The farmer’s profit, according to him, ranges from PHP28,000 to PHP56,000 per family annually.
Refined sugar’s current market price in Metro Manila is between PHP90 and PHP110 per kilogram, washed sugar is between PHP85 and PHP95 per kilogram, and brown sugar is between PHP80 and PHP95 per kilogram.
illicit sugar
The SRA, meanwhile, reaffirmed that it is prepared to abide by the rules once permission is granted to sell the allegedly smuggled sugar in Kadiwa markets.
Azcona remarked in a mix of English and Filipino, “The SRA will do every instruction of BOC (Bureau of Customs) and DA (Department of Agriculture) to accelerate everything to use the sugar if they chose to do so.
However, sanitary and phytosanitary tests still need to be performed on refined sugar.
Authorities had impounded a shipment of refined sugar from Thailand that contained 4,000 metric tons in Batangas. According to the SRA, BOC continues to be in possession of the seized sugar.
