Even when the public health emergency is over, masks are still required, according to an expert
On Wednesday, a health expert advised against lifting the face mask requirement should the public health emergency caused by coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) continue.
Mananatili pa rin ang face mask kung anuman iyong magbabago dito sa public health emergency at iyong state of calamity, dahil ito ang importanteng instrument natin yang tayo magkakahawa-hawaan. No matter how the public health emergency or state of calamity evolves, face masks will continue to be used because they are a crucial instrument for preventing infection. In a televised public briefing, infectious disease specialist Dr. Rontgene Solante stated, “Covid is still here.
As nations continue to go forward and live with the virus, Solante said the World Health Organization (WHO) has published updated Covid-19 guidelines that contain three crucial actions.
They consist of:
— The use of face masks in crowded or poorly ventilated areas and by high-risk individuals (such as healthcare workers, the elderly, and immunocompromised).
— A shorter duration of seclusion. Instead of taking 14 days, isolation will last 10 days, or until symptoms have subsided for three days. If asymptomatic, the recommended total number of days in isolation is five as opposed to 10. One may self-isolate at home or in a medical facility, then get tested for an antigen.
— Antiviral Paxlovid, a therapy option for people at high risk, to avert serious and life-threatening cases
Solante responded in the affirmative when asked if the nation was prepared for the lifting of the public health emergency, noting that the number of Covid-19 cases nationwide had decreased to manageable levels, the number of admissions to hospitals had not surpassed capacity, and many people had already received their initial vaccinations and booster shots.
Maria Rosario Vergeire, the officer in charge of the Department of Health, stated on Tuesday that the nation is ready in the event that the WHO lifts the Covid-19-related global health emergency declaration because Filipinos are “cautious and vigilant,” and protocols and safety measures are in place whenever infections rise.
