Once a probe is completed, confiscated sugar may be sold in Kadiwa outlets: BOC
The Bureau of Customs (BOC) announced on Thursday that shipments of illegal sugar that were seized in recent operations are the subject of an inquiry before they may be sold in Kadiwa outlets.
“Since last year, the Bureau of Customs has seized various agricultural products, mainly sugar. Following the issuance of an order of seizure by our bureau, these are the ones that are now under investigation, BOC operations chief and spokesperson Arnaldo dela Torre Jr. stated in a Laging Handa briefing.
On January 11, customs inspectors at the Manila International Container Port (MICP) seized illicit imported refined sugar from Hong Kong valued at PHP24 million which was also claimed to include surge arresters, slipper outsoles, and insulators.
The BOC recently discovered 4,000 metric tons of refined sugar from Thailand valued at PHP240 million at the Batangas Port on January 13.
The BOC representative continued, “The agency is undertaking an inquiry into those that were confiscated at MICP and in Batangas so that we can have full authority and submit it to the government.
The BOC recorded over 700 seizures of illegally obtained commodities in 2022, totaling PHP24.28 billion.
Agriculture accounts for PHP1.87 billion of the total, while the remaining PHP11.95 billion is made up of illegal drugs and counterfeit goods that have been found (PHP7.69 billion).
Dela Torre stated that the bureau’s operations are getting close to being fully digitalized.
He declared that the BOC fully supports the effort by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to digitalize their procedures in order to combat smuggling.
“The Bureau of Customs appreciates our President’s assessment and advice. Although we’ve begun digitization efforts and have now digitized about 92 percent of the Bureau of Customs, there is still a pressing need to do so. The Bureau of Customs must go digital, and the President’s plan is an excellent place to start as we step up our fight against smuggling to increase income,” he continued.
