Comelec considers extending voter registration in flood-affected areas

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is considering whether voter registration can be extended in regions where it has been halted because of inclement weather.

“We have run out of ideas at this point. Our workers have been thoroughly informed about the registration. Therefore, we don’t see any justification, with the possible exception of some locations where registration may be suspended due to severe floods, Comelec Chair George Erwin Garcia stated in a televised interview.

“Perhaps we can expand there. However, he continued, “Generally speaking, it is not a good idea to always ask for an extension if there is a deadline.

A low-pressure system, shear line, and the northeast monsoon all contributed to the severe rains that caused flooding earlier this month in the Visayas and Mindanao.

The registration period will conclude this month, Garcia said.

In terms of registration, the “Filipino attitude na bukas na lang” (the Filipino tendency to put off things) is bad. So, we’ll adhere to the deadline of January 31. Our citizens shouldn’t have any more justifications for not registering, he said.

In the meantime, he claimed that the anticipated number of registrations is being met.

“As of right now, 1,028,000 (applications) have been received. Additionally, we anticipate being able to register 1.5 to 2 million voters between December 12 and January 31. The forecast of at least 1.5 million is realistic, Garcia continued.

The main headquarters of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in Quezon City is where Comelec opened the one-day Register Anywhere Project (RAP) site on Monday.

The House of Representatives and Senate of the Philippines will also serve as RAP sites this week in addition to the DSWD.

Every Comelec office nationwide is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays through Saturdays to accept registration requests and handle any election-related issues.
