Meralco said it would be delivering the required power from the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market as the 300-megawatt emergency power supply agreement (EPSA) between Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) and Aboitiz-led GNPower Dinginin Ltd. expired on Wednesday (WESM).

To cover the PSA with San Miguel Corp.’s South Premiere Power Corporation (SPPC), which was suspended by a 60-day temporary restraining order (TRO) of the Court of Appeals in December 2022, Meralco stated in a statement that it would source the entire 670 MW capacity from WESM beginning Thursday.

Prior to the TRO, Meralco and GNPower Dinginin had a 300 MW EPSA to source a portion of the 670 MW PSA from SPPC that was lost.

The EPSA with GNPower Dinginin was from December 15, 2022, to January 25, 2023.

“Meralco is closely collaborating with the Department of Energy and all pertinent industry players to ensure adequate supply and protect its customers from volatile and higher WESM prices, which is particularly crucial with the scheduled closure of the Malampaya natural gas facility next month and the anticipated rise in demand during the summer months,” Meralco said.

According to Meralco, the Competitive Selection Process (CSP) for 480 MW supply was launched in December 2022 with a target delivery date of next month.

Meralco guarantees its consumers that it takes every possible step to keep providing consistent and dependable energy at the lowest cost possible given the current situation.

AboitizPower Corp. verified the EPSA’s expiration on Wednesday in a different statement.

According to the EPSA, the new 1,336 MW GNPower Dinginin Plant in Mariveles, Bataan, provided 300 MW of power at a fixed cost of PHP5.95 per kilowatt-hour.

In the event that Meralco introduces another CSP “where the terms of reference will be appropriate,” the business said it would take part.
