The mission of the Philippine Coast Guard is intensifying more than ever: PBBM
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) was once again urged by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Thursday to continue guarding the nation’s maritime area, stressing how recent developments in the South China Sea (SCS) have made their task “more intensive” than in previous years.
Marcos acknowledged the PCG’s major responsibilities in search and rescue and boundary patrol during his speech at the Malacaan Palace oath-taking ceremony, but added that “many activities that once belonged to the Philippine Navy have been transferred to the PCG.”
“This has a pretty straightforward cause. We do this to avoid escalating tensions by deploying Philippine military personnel and equipment there. Because we are stating that these are Coast Guard vessels rather than military vessels, he said.
“โฆThat mission has become more, should we say, intense, as many of the incidents have begun to reveal over the past few years. You are now required to protect not only the shoreline but also our citizens “Added he.
PCG employees, according to Marcos, are “frontliners” prepared to deal with dangers approaching from the country’s coastlines.
In order to prevent any unfortunate situations, blunders, or misunderstandings that can lead to the issue spiraling out of our control, he stated, “we must guard ourselves; we must be ready, attentive, and diligent in the work that we do.”
The PCG’s modernization effort, which includes strengthening the PCG’s capabilities, buildings, and equipment, will continue to be supported, he also pledged.
“I’m sure that every single one of our officers is aware of this goal and is aware of how to carry it out. To ensure the safety of our residents, we will continue to support you in every manner we can “said he.
“The safety of the people of the Philippines depends on this. It is crucial to the Republic’s defense. It is essential to protecting our land, he continued.
The PCG is tasked with carrying out maritime search and rescue, maritime law enforcement, maritime safety, marine environmental preservation, and maritime security. It is an affiliated agency of the Department of Transportation (DOTr).
The Philippine Coast Guard Law, also known as Republic Act 5173, was passed by Congress in 1967, allowing for the establishment of the PCG as one of the main naval forces. PCG was unable to receive capability improvements from other foreign nations due to its military nature.
In 1998, the PCG’s duties were transferred to the Department of Transportation Communications (DOTC) after they were reformed to be more civilian in nature.
In the SCS, the claims of the Philippines, China, and numerous other littoral governments overlap.
Beijing’s nine-dash line, a delineation that spans about 80% of the South China Sea, was found to be unlawful in a 2016 arbitral decision by the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA), which is situated in The Hague. China consistently disregarded the PCA decision.
