Following approval of its Active Transport Infrastructure Improvement Program by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), the Department of Transportation (DOTr) will upgrade sidewalks and bicycle lanes throughout the National Capital Region (NCR) (ATIIP).

The DOTr stated on Friday that adjustments to road design, “widening of pedestrian walkways, and protected bi-directional bike lanes,” will be included in a dry run of the ATIIP.

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) have a strategic collaboration that aims to improve the overall infrastructure for active transportation along EDSA, notably in Santolan, Ortigas, and Shaw, according to the statement.

Tuesday’s alignment meeting, which was organized by MMDA General Manager Ret. P/Col. Procopio Lipana and Assistant General Manager for Operations attorney Victor Pablo Trinidad resulted in the project’s approval.

The Philippine Development Plan (PDP) 2023–2028, which President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. approved last December 16, 2022, is being implemented by the DOTr. According to the announcement, pedestrians and bikers would be given the highest priority in the PDP 2023–2028.

The ATIIP seeks to improve vehicular traffic in NCR by encouraging drivers to leave their cars at home in addition to enhancing the safety and comfort of pedestrians and bicycles.

The statement read, “The national government firmly believes that improving and expanding mass transportation and active transportation networks is the only solution to alleviate traffic congestion along EDSA and in all other urban areas around the nation.”
