The advantage over competitors for PLDT/Smart

One of the biggest telecoms in the Philippines is PLDT Inc., originally known as Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. It offers a variety of communications services, including fixed-line and mobile phone service, internet access, and data services.

Cellular and fixed-line telephony are the two main business segments through which the company conducts its operations. While the fixed-line division offers landline and broadband internet services under the brand name PLDT Home, the wireless segment offers mobile telecommunications services under the brand name Smart Communications.

As of the end of 2021, it had revenues of more than P193 billion and a net income of P26.67 billion. Since it has a long history in the sector and has a well-known brand, PLDT dominates the market. The business has been in business for more than a century and has built a solid reputation for dependability and high-caliber service. A national fiber-optic backbone and domestic transmission network that connects all significant cities and municipalities in the Philippines is also run by PLDT, giving it a larger coverage than other providers.

What distinguishes it from its main rivals in reality? Mr. Angel Redoble, PLDT’s first vice president and top information security officer, presented the company’s competitive advantage over its competitors on January 25 during a conference in Subic, Zambales.

online services that are secure

In order to guarantee the constant availability of PLDT’s information technology (IT) assets to all of its subscribers while maintaining the confidentiality and integrity of the same, Redoble claims that PLDT re-engineered its cyber security posture.

(Note: The entire security of an organization’s IT infrastructure is referred to as its cyber security posture. It consists of the practices, technologies, policies, and procedures put in place by an organization to safeguard its data and information systems from illegal access, use, disclosure, interruption, alteration, and destruction. A company with a good security posture will have put strong security measures in place and be actively looking for and addressing possible weaknesses.

Redoble underlined that in order to improve its security framework and refocus its end goals, the company’s business mindset needs to transition from being confident to paranoid, from vendor-driven to concept-driven, and from defensive to offensive. Fast response times to security incidents, speedy recovery from breaches, ongoing network and security infrastructure monitoring, improved investigation, and open reporting of security matters are among PLDT’s main security priorities.

All of the organization’s policies and standards have been updated as part of its cyber security governance, Redoble continued, and compliance with numerous laws and regulations as well as the requirements of third-party auditors regarding disclosure and internal controls has also been achieved.

defending the neighborhood

Redoble declared: “We are now defending and securing a community, not simply computers and network infrastructures!” More than 13.9 billion attempts to access harmful websites were prevented in 2022 alone in order to safeguard PLDT’s users.

There were 1.3 billion attempts to access prohibited OSAEC URLs and contents, 416 million efforts to access blocked SMiShing messages, and 114 million attempts to prevent cyberattacks and data breaches. Additionally, 230,000 cellphone numbers used in phishing, SMSiShing, and Vshing operations were blacklisted by PLDT. A total of about 6 million domains containing OSAEC URLs and malicious URLs were also blacklisted.

(Note: OSAEC, or online sexual abuse or exploitation of children, stands for this. URL, often known as a domain or web address, stands for universal resource location. SMiShing is the fraudulent act of sending text messages to people posing as representatives of well-known businesses in an effort to get them to divulge personal information like passwords or credit card data. The deceptive activity of calling or leaving voicemails with the same goal as SMiShing is known as vishing.)

Redoble emphasized the importance of them taking a “breach position” as part of this new way of thinking. Simulated cyberwar scenarios were used to assess the incident response capabilities of the different IT organizations. The simulations went well, and the participants actively participated the entire time. The simulation demonstrated that PLDT’s officials and workers were in agreement with their understanding of and ability to articulate the incident response procedure, as well as the appropriate measures or interventions required to recover from the cyber war occurrences.

The capability to predict a cyberattack is a noteworthy aspect of its IT operations. To proactively spot an assault before it even reaches the environment, PLDT maintains a database of around 120 million threat reports. In order to reduce the impact on operational, legal, financial, reputational, and compliance concerns, a quick response is required.

The objective of PLDT was also expanded to include evangelizing its cyber security approach to its clients and other stakeholders.

The Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) hosted the three-day discussion, which was attended by a wide range of parties, including the Commission on Elections. The National Telecommunications Commission, Philippine National Police, Globe Telecom Inc., and WiT are among the other attendees.

The event was made possible by the efforts of several people, including Comelec Commissioner Nelson Celis’ office Jeannine Roxas and CICC Assistant Secretary Mary Rose Magsaysay. As one of the facilitators, I was hired.
