Addressing climate change requires scientific research, according to CCC

To guarantee the success of the nation in the fight against climate change, the Climate Change Commission (CCC) on Wednesday encouraged engagement and cooperation with the regional research community.

Robert Borje, executive director of the CCC, emphasized the significance of scientific research in combating climate change at the 34th Regional Symposium on Research and Development Highlights in Batac City, Ilocos Norte province.

According to Borje, research and development were crucial in enhancing local communities’ capacity to carry out adaptation and mitigation strategies for climate change.

“Science is essential to our success as a society. The 34th Regional Symposium on Research and Development Highlights is essential for advancing domestic science and motivating policymakers to make climate change-related decisions that matter, all the way down to the barangay (village) level, according to him.

“We need you, local researchers who are here now. The nation requires you. Most critically, we need you for our shared future, he continued.

In order to produce and implement additional climate actions “with tangible outcomes,” Borje further committed the CCC to continue to create and enhance collaborations with the academic community, the commercial sector, development partners, and essential stakeholders like scientists and innovators.

Borje attended the opening ceremony of the annual symposium hosted by the Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) and the Ilocos Agriculture, Aquatic Resources Research and Development Consortium. She was accompanied by CCC Commissioners Rachel Anne Herrera and Albert dela Cruz Sr.

The president of MMSU, Dr. Shirley Agrupis, and Dr. Nathaniel Alibuyog, vice chair of research and extension at MMSU and member of the CCC’s National panel of technical experts, welcomed the CCC delegation.

Herera and Dela Cruz also endorsed the robust and effective implementation of MMSU’s environmental sustainability and climate action programs.

In doing so, Herrera recognized the Ilocos region’s efforts to build “resilient and adaptive” communities through the implementation of climate change adaptation and mitigation measures.

As a region and as a developing nation that is particularly sensitive to climate change, “this vision, along with the tools of science, will help us prepare for climate change,” she said.

Dela Cruz stated that scientific research and development would be the cornerstone of the nation’s “sustainable food security” given that climate change is a “major challenge.”

The annual symposium, which will take place from February 1 to 3, will have the theme “Pagkain sa Bansa ay Siguraduhin, Likas-yamang Produksyon ng Agrikultura’t Pangisdaan ay Isulong Natin Ayon sa Pagbabago ng Panahon,” and will concentrate on the presentation and recognition of research and development technologies and breakthroughs.

Participants in the three-day event at the MMSU’s Teatro Ilocandia in Batac will include officials from the national government agencies, academic and scientific communities, local government units, the commercial sector, and non-governmental groups.

The Local Planners Forum was also held by the MMSU and the CCC to talk about the creation and improvement of Local Climate Change Action Plans (LCCAPs) and access to the People’s Survival Fund (PSF).

Officers from 24 local government units in Ilocos Norte will attend the conference, including officers in charge of planning, the environment, and natural resources, as well as disaster risk reduction and management.
