3,604 abaca farmers who are recipients of the Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers (TUPAD) program have received assistance worth PHP19.7 million from the Department of Labor and Employment in Bicol (DOLE-5), through its provincial office in Catanduanes.

Imelda Romanillos, the recently appointed provincial head of the DOLE in Catanduanes and concurrent assistant regional director, along with senior labor employment officer Jomell Pasano and TUPAD program focal person Kim Zuniga, personally gave the check to Catanduanes Governor Joseph Cua last Wednesday, according to a report from DOLE-5 spokesperson Johana Vi Gasga.

“The recipients will work for 15 days and get paid at least PHP365 per day. In order to plant abaca trees in their farms, backyards, and plantations, they will be working to clear underbrush and forest waste.

They will undergo the orientation on the TUPAD program, encompassing safety and health and fundamental first aid management, before beginning their work, according to Gasga.

They will also be enrolled in the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) and given complete personal protection equipment, “Added she.

The “Abaca Rehab” initiative, which intends to restore and revive abaca plantations around the province from the damage brought on by recent typhoons, will employ the farmer-beneficiaries.

The DOLE’s TUPAD program provides temporary emergency employment to help those affected by tragedies, disasters, and epidemics in the informal economy.
