PH-Japan agricultural cooperation to enhance value chain and logistics

The Department of Agriculture (DA) stated on Saturday that the Philippines and Japan’s effort to increase agricultural cooperation will help address a number of problems plaguing the sector, including concerns with logistics and the food value chain.

In light of the fact that a cooperative agricultural framework was established as a result of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s business trip to Japan, which will foster greater coordination and collaboration between Tokyo and Manila, DA Undersecretary Zam Ampatuan stated at the Quezon City eatery Dapo’s Saturday News Forum,

Ampatuan remarked, “With this framework of shared cooperation, we can articulate in much clearer terms what we actually required.

“Therefore, this framework, which was decided upon during President Marcos’ most recent visit, may address such issues. Of course, we can learn a lot from Japan’s long experience, which began as an agricultural economy before industrializing, and we can also benefit from the improvement in technology “Added he.

According to Ampatuan, the problem with the food value chain is currently a “major concern” when it comes to tackling food production and food losses.

He continued by saying that in order to increase food production for the market, logistical issues must be resolved.

“The effectiveness of our food value chain is crucial since this is one area where we fall short. The only real problem is figuring out how to organize our farmers, how the government actually sets up small farm holdings, and how to synchronize our marketing “explained he. “Japan may be able to spend money on those. The framework for this value chain system’s operation must be established by the government. There’s a demand.”

Ampatuan asserted that the government needs to engage in agriculture more aggressively because the private sector is “not as ready” to do so and is “not prepared to take the risk.”

According to Ampatuan, successful small farmers require important inputs, particularly in the areas of enterprise systems and mechanization.

“Therefore, this is where we can possibly address the problem of how to combine small farms into huge ones. We can likely implement consolidation, synchronized production, and “said he.

Ampatuan continued, “On our part, we should be able to create a more sustainable system, enterprise structure for farmers.

Ampatuan anticipates “more tangible initiatives” to advance the nation’s agricultural industry.

He stated that as of right now, the nation is creating a “master plan” for agricultural logistics that is anticipated to be made public by September of this year.

On Thursday, seven bilateral agreements covering cooperation in a range of areas, including agriculture, were signed between Japan and the Philippines.
