As the province recorded 418 cases, predominantly in youngsters, the Davao de Oro provincial health office ramped up its communication campaign on hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD).

Dr. Antonio Ybiernas, the provincial health officer, stated HFMD is a viral illness that can spread to anyone during a virtual press conference on Thursday.

If caused by enterovirus Coxsackievirus A16, the majority of HFMD cases are moderate, self-limiting, and not fatal, he noted.

However, Ybiernas cautioned that if left untreated, it may develop into meningitis, encephalitis, and polio-like paralysis, occasionally leading to death.

He stated, “I would like to advise everyone, especially the kids, to wash their hands frequently, use face masks, consume healthy foods, and get enough sleep.”

Laak Town had the highest number of cases (418) in the province, followed by Nabunturan (55), New Bataan (52), Maragusan (50), Mabini (40), and Montevista (29). A total of 18 cases were reported in Compostela town, including Monkayo (12), Mawab (9), Maco (8), and Pantukan (4).

“Up until the age of 10, children are the main victims of this. Adults can also acquire it, but this happens very seldom, according to Ybiernas.

Regarding its signs, fever, mouth sores, and skin rash are typically present on the buttocks, arms, legs, palms of the hands, and soles of the feet.

“Infected environments and items may be the source of the disease. That is why we stressed how important it is to wash your hands,” Ybiernas remarked.
