According to a Gallup and Knight Foundation survey, just 25% of respondents specifically said that news organizations do not intend to mislead the public.

Overall, 53% of respondents stated they have very negative or neutral opinions on the news media. Just 26% of people claimed to have a very or somewhat positive opinion of the institution.

While attitudes toward the national news media were declining across the political spectrum, those of Fox News viewers—typically Republicans—were particularly poor.

The study was conducted at a time when there is a general mistrust of the American news media as many organizations, especially national television networks, try to increase viewership by airing frequently divisive weekly shows.

According to Knight Foundation President Alberto Ibarguen, “this data provides additional evidence that trustworthy news is the foundation and the goal of sustainable journalism.” We think that people who trust the news are better informed, more engaged, and more ready to take part in our democracy in meaningful ways.

The majority of People continue to feel that local news organizations care more about the impact of their reporting on their audiences than do national news organizations.

65 percent of respondents believed local media outlets had the means and capacity to inform the public in a fair and accurate manner.

More than half of respondents said they had faith in local media’s capacity to provide the information the public needs, and 44% said they did not believe they would intentionally mislead. It is almost twice as many as said the same thing to major news media.

In total, 5,600 people responded to the survey.
