Pushing a bill that would make marijuana legal for medical use
Tuesday, two representatives in the House of Representatives worked to have a bill that would have legalized marijuana or cannabis for medical use passed.
Congressman Robert “Ace” Barbers of the Surigao Del Norte 2nd District, who chairs the House Committee on Dangerous Drugs, stated during a public hearing that although cannabis may be authorized for medicinal use, HB 6783 forbids its usage for recreational purposes.
“Recently, laws governing the aforementioned substance for medicinal use are being loosened in an increasing number of nations. Its recreational use is already permitted in several nations. We will restrict it to medical uses just for our reasons, Barbers stated.
Bill 6783, written by former House Speaker and current Davao del Norte Representative Pantaleon Alvarez, aims to remove marijuana from the list of prohibited narcotics.
Cannabis and its derivatives being labeled as a harmful narcotic, according to Alvarez, “makes no sense at all.” And we need to put an end to this foolishness, he added.
According to Barbers, there is proof that cannabis oil and its derivatives are benefiting people with life-threatening illnesses.
It won’t be long before we are inundated with requests to open our eyes and minds to the most recent scientific advancements that are already helping humanity, he predicted. “Why would we stand in the way and deny the sick relief and enjoyment of life if our chemical-heavy pharmaceutical couldn’t find the treatment for these illnesses?”
He claimed that it is past time for authorities to consider cannabis’ beneficial properties.
“If there is a positive aspect to it, we should definitely take it into consideration. Have a look at amphetamine, which is a key ingredient in shabu. It is an essential component or ingredient in many medicines that are now used on a global scale, according to Barbers.
Alvarez defended his legislation by pointing out that despite the fact that the government permits the production and sale of these items, many violent crimes, accidents, and acts of violence are caused by alcohol consumption, smoking causes lung cancer and eating sweets and soft drinks causes diabetes.
Alvarez declared, “Definitely something is wrong.
He claimed that the government continues to permit the production and sale of alcohol, cigarettes, and soft drinks despite the harm they cause because doing so generates tax income.
“Cannabis should be legal if this is the final justification for permitting the production and sale of the aforementioned items to the general public. It has the potential to bring in billions of dollars. The experience of other nations and governments that have ended the needless restriction of this substance is unequivocal evidence, he continued.
Alvarez referenced the State of Colorado, which since legalizing cannabis in 2014 has been able to collect over $1 billion in cannabis tax revenues. Colorado received USD 423 million in cannabis tax income in 2021, an increase of over 10% from the previous year.
If the State of Nevada legalizes recreational marijuana, it will support over 41,000 employees by 2024 and produce over USD 1.7 billion in labor income, according to a study by the RCG Economics and Marijuana Policy Group, he continued.
“Let’s give marijuana another try. Let’s help HB 6783, also known as An Act Eliminating Cannabis and Any Form of Derivative Thereof off the List of Illegal Drugs and Substances Under Current Laws, pass so that we may achieve this, he said.
