PBBM: Subsea cable project should improve connectivity in the Philippines
President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. declared Tuesday that the Philippines will soon benefit from larger and better interconnectivity as he hailed the undersea cable system project of Converge ICT Solutions Inc. and Keppel Telecommunications and Transport (T&T) Ltd.
Following his Tuesday meeting at Malacaan Palace in Manila with Keppel T&T CEO and executive director Thomas Pang Thieng Hwi and Converge founder and CEO Dennis Anthony Uy, Marcos delivered the good news.
According to Marcos, the collaboration between Converge and Keppel T&T will give the nation a faster and wider bandwidth internet connection.
“In order to install an undersea fiber optic connection from the west coast of the United States, the Converge group has partnered with the Keppel group. We just wrapped off our meeting with them. Further to Singapore and Indonesia, it will connect to the Philippines “As he summarized his conversation with the telecom companies, he remarked.
“Moreover, this will increase our bandwidth. This will improve our ability to communicate with all of the web services that the world uses “Added him.
Converge, one of the nation’s fiber internet service providers, and Keppel T&T entered into a legally binding agreement in 2001 for Converge to take part in the construction of the world’s first subsea cable system, the Bifrost Cable System, which will link Singapore with the west coast of North America.
The news that the Philippines would be a part of the Bifrost Cable System Project to improve internet access there thrilled Marcos.
“When I traveled to Singapore, it was this usapan that was particularly bunga. (This came about as a result of my trip to Singapore.) Pinag-usapan namin ito kaya’t ngayon nabuo na at ilalagay nila, isasama nila ang Philippines doon sa kanilang mahabang fiber optic na kable. We discussed it, and as a result, the Philippines will now be a part of the long fiber optic cable project “explained he.
According to data from the Ookla Speedtest Global Index as of January 2023, the Philippines is rated 82nd out of 142 nations in terms of mobile internet speed and 41st out of 180 nations in terms of fixed broadband media speed.
Via the Department of Information and Communications Technology’s (DICT) free BroadBand ng Masa program, the Marcos administration has so far created a total of 4,757 operable live sites in 75 provinces and Metro Manila.
The program is applicable to GIDAs, such as the provinces of Basilan, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi (BaSuLTa), and Pag-asa Island of the Kalayaan Group of Islands in the province of Palawan.
There are roughly 4 million unique users of the Broadband ng Masa program nationally.
The government intends to open more than 15,000 locations with free Wi-Fi in 2023.
According to the terms of their contract, Converge and Keppel T&T will each receive an irrevocable right to use one fiber pair on the Bifrost Cable System’s main trunk.
Keppel Midgard Holdings Pte. Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Keppel T&T, and Converge will work together to create a branch of the Bifrost Cable System that will land in Davao.
The 15,000-kilometer underwater cable system project, which is anticipated to be finished in 2024, intends to connect Singapore directly to the west coast of North America by way of Guam, Indonesia, and the Philippines.
For a better digital experience, the initiative aims to increase connectivity across the region’s businesses and governments, including cloud service providers, telecommunications providers, network providers, over-the-top providers, data centers, and consumers.
The enormous high-speed transmission line across the Pacific Ocean will be the multiple fiber-paired, high-performance Bifrost Cable System.
