Public schools are urged by DepEd to do surprise fire and earthquake drills
To ensure that students and instructors are prepared, the Department of Education (DepEd) ordered public schools to hold surprise fire and earthquake drills on Thursday.
The DepEd issued a statement saying, “Let us keep our students, staff, and schools safe from the dangers of fires, earthquakes, and other calamities through effective planning and simulation exercises.
According to DepEd Order 53, school administration was required to carry out these drills on a regular basis.
The Department of Education (DepEd) reminded all public schools to conduct unannounced fire and earthquake exercises every first and third week of the month as the country observed Fire Prevention Month in March.
According to the DepEd, private schools and other educational institutions may modify the frequency of surprise exercises to properly prepare students, instructors, and non-teaching staff for disasters.
Furthermore encouraged to embrace the terms of the abovementioned DO were private schools, community learning centers, and state and local universities and colleges, it was stated.
The education department is still keeping an eye on the Davao Region’s earthquake-affected schools.
The DepEd 11 (Davao Area) reported 54 damaged schools as of March 8 following the magnitude 5.9 earthquake that shook the region.
Davao del Norte has 18 schools, Panabo City has 24, Davao de Oro, Davao Oriental, Tagum City, and Island Garden City of Samal each have three schools with reported infrastructure deterioration.
The DepEd is still investigating the true cost of damage done to schools.
