In order to increase sewer coverage and reduce pollution loading into bodies of water, Maynilad Water Services, Inc. (Maynilad) plans to spend around PHP178 billion between 2023 and 2046.

The spending plan will cover the building of 18 new sewage treatment plants (STPs) in various locations, the installation of about 360 kilometers of new sewer lines to collect and transport household wastewater to STPs, as well as the upgrading of 17 existing wastewater facilities to comply with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources revised effluent standards.

“Our investment program includes the laying of essential infrastructure to collect and treat the wastewater generated by households so we can ensure environmental sustainability,” Maynilad Chief Operating Officer Randolph Estrellado said in a statement on Wednesday. “Besides improving the distribution of drinking water supply.

In the cities of Valenzuela, Caloocan, Las Pinas, Tunasan, and Cupang in Muntinlupa, the water company is actively building new STPs and installing sewer conveyance systems.

When fully operational, the new facilities will be able to treat 419 MLD of wastewater per day, providing service to about 1.75 MLD of inhabitants.

A 140-MLD capacity STP and sewer line project in Manila are also part of the company’s long-term plan.

The construction of new septage treatment plants and the acquisition of new vacuum trucks for septic tank desludging activities have allowed Maynilad to expand its sanitation service while also adding 20 STPs to the existing two. Since 2007, Maynilad has already spent PHP41.2 billion on its wastewater management projects alone.
