Local airlines are in favor of domestic operations using NAIA 2.

On Thursday, regional airlines AirAsia Philippines and Philippine Airlines (PAL) expressed support for the government’s proposal to restrict domestic flights to Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 2.

The Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) stated last Tuesday that effective on July 1, Terminal 2 will only be used for domestic flights operated by PAL and AirAsia. PAL has been using Terminal 2 for both domestic and international flights.

The management’s proposal to maximize utilization of all the NAIA terminals, according to AirAsia Philippines spokesperson Steve Dailisan in a radio interview on Thursday, has the support of the airline.

He said that they already had noticed that their domestic flights would be moving from Terminal 4 to Terminal 2, giving them some time to plan.

We’re fine with it. However, Dailisan stated, “We will ask that our international flights be transferred from Terminal 3 to Terminal 1 because some overseas passengers might need to catch a connecting flight to a local destination. He added, “It’s quite a distance between Terminals 3 and 2.”

According to Dailisan, the MIAA has told them that there is still room in Terminal 1 for additional passengers.

PAL’s flights to and from the United States, Canada, and the Middle East have been relocated to Terminal 1 as of December 2022.

The remainder of PAL’s foreign flights will be moved to Terminal 1 by June 16 according to an announcement made earlier this week by MIAA Senior Assistant General Manager Bryan Co.

NAIA Terminal 1 could accommodate 6.5 million passengers a year, according to MIAA. It stated that there will be 18,000 passengers per day on average during the first two months of 2023.

The MIAA is now discussing with stakeholders the terminal improvements, according to PAL spokesperson Cielo Villaluna.

As PAL prepares for the use of Terminal 2 as an exclusively domestic terminal, she stated in a statement, “We support initiatives that aim to enhance the total passenger experience.”

Since Terminal 2 was initially intended to be a domestic airport, a section for the Bureau of Immigration and a Duty-Free shop were not included in the original plan.

Immigration agents stationed at Terminal 2 might, according to Co, increase staffing levels at Terminals 1 and 3.
