The owner of MT Princess Empress is subject to fines and cease-and-desist orders

A vital biodiverse area off Mindoro Island has had an oil spill, and maritime regulatory authorities revealed on Thursday that they have issued cease and desist orders against the corporation that owns the sunken MT Princess Empress.

Hernani Fabia, the administrator of the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA), said the organization issued two cease and desist orders against RDC Reield Marine Services – one for its Certificate of Public Convenience (CPC) and the other against the continued operations of its remaining three vessels – in an ambush interview after the meeting of the Oil Spill Inter-Agency Committee at the Department of Justice (DOJ).

According to him, the directives will be in effect until the investigations into the oil spill have been satisfactorily concluded.

Fabia also emphasized that the sunken vessel was designated as “newly constructed” in MARINA’s records to distinguish it from vessels that were thought to be “brand new.”

He claimed, “This is not brand-new; it was freshly built from the ground up.

The vessel was already outdated and wasn’t designed to be a tanker from the start, according to Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla.

Environmental Undersecretary Ignatius Rodriguez stated during the inter-agency meeting that administrative fines of PHP 471,000 per day beginning on March 1 until the oil spill is contained may be imposed on the vessel’s owners owing to “contamination.”

But he added that more samples are still being taken.

Along with Remulla, Fabia, and Rodriguez, other attendees included the chairman of the committee Raul Vasquez, the secretary of transportation Jaime Bautista, the admiral of the coast guard Artemio Abu, and Relly Garcia from the bureau of fisheries and aquatic resources.
