DOST increases brown rice production and consumption in Aurora

To increase the production and consumption of brown rice, the Department of Science and Technology in Central Luzon (DOST-3) recently donated a compact impeller brown rice mill (CIBRM) to a group of farmers in Aurora province.

The Calaocan Dipaculao Farmers Association members in Dipaculao town would gain from the effort, which falls under the agency’s Expanded Community Empowerment through Science and Technology (eCEST) program.

Director of DOST-Region 3 Julius Caesar Sicat stated on Friday that farmers would be able to convert their palay yield into brown rice through CIBRM.

Sicat emphasized the need for more individuals to have access to brown rice, particularly those who lack certain nutrients.

In a statement, he stated that “the DOST seeks to increase the consumption of brown rice through the CIBRM by expanding its accessibility to more people in local communities where malnutrition, especially among children, may be present.”

When the hull of the rice grain is the only part that is removed, a larger quantity of nutritionally significant fibers, minerals, and natural oils are left behind, making brown rice more nutrient-dense than polished white rice.

Sicat claimed that in addition to facilitating easier access to brown rice, the CIBRM will allow farmers to increase the value of their rice harvest.

In comparison to the majority of common rice mills, such as the stone disc or so-called “kiskisan,” which has a lower milling recovery of 50–55 percent, the compact brown rice mill, according to the DOST, has a milling recovery of about 70 percent.

The local rice farmers’ output and income will significantly increase as a result of the better recovery and more effective milling, he continued.

The farmer-beneficiaries, he added, could also save on transportation costs since they would no longer need to transfer their products to industrial rice mills.

By utilizing the portable rice mill, Sicat intends to increase the consumption of brown rice, which will improve the nutritional state of the local community.
