The Tacloban government promises to renovate the 6.1-hectare Leyte Park Hotel.

The local government unit maintained its plan to rehabilitate the Leyte Park Hotel complex, which former First Lady Imelda Marcos built 44 years ago, as the municipal government pushed its tourism promotion.

Anacleto Rei Lacanilao III, the city administrator, indicated that the details, including the budget, are still being finalized.

The refurbishment project was initially revealed in October of last year.

“The remodeling strategy is ongoing. The project will be funded by the city government. Since there are numerous methods to finance it, we will discover resources. Since I don’t want to raise expectations, I’m still unsure of the exact start date. As soon as we can, we will renovate, Lacanilao assured reporters on Monday.

The local administration was hoping to get a loan from the Land Bank of the Philippines last year, according to Mayor Alfred Romualdez, with half of the proceeds going towards buying and renovating the hotel.

The former first lady’s initiative led to the construction of the 6.1-hectare Leyte Park Hotel complex in 1979.

Following the Edsa People Power Revolution in 1986, the government seized control of the hotel. Its ownership was given to the Leyte Provincial Government, the Privatization Management Office, and the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority.

The hotel was leased to a private firm in 1994, but in late 2021, the company said it would close Leyte Park Resort Hotel in favor of constructing a new resort in the neighborhood.

After repair, the building will be made available to a private enterprise with the resources and expertise to manage a hotel operation, according to Lacanilao.

A minimum of 2,000 employees would be generated by the hotel’s reopening, and the city would require more hotel rooms in expectation of an increase in tourists and even investors.
