The Marcos administration has allotted a total budget of PHP1.737 billion for the modernization of the Bureau of Fire Protection in support of the ongoing growth and enhancement of the nation’s fire service. (BFP).

The money from the fund will go towards building new and better facilities and buying fire engines, firefighting gear, PPE, and emergency and rescue supplies.

According to the Fiscal Year 2023 General Appropriations Act (GAA), PHP737 billion of the total is budgeted for the BFP specifically, and PHP1 billion will come from the other PHP80 billion in taxes, fees, and fines collected in line with the Fire Code of the Philippines.

“Let us highlight the unique provision made by the Marcos Jr. administration to promote the modernization of our BFP as we mark Fire Prevention Month. We have given our firefighters a total of PHP 1.7 billion in equipment. Amenah Pangandaman, the secretary of the Department of Budget and Management (DBM), stated this in a news release on Tuesday. “This is to recognize how important they are in society as life savers in times of disasters and emergencies,” the release read.

March is recognized as Fire Prevention Month every year by Presidential Proclamation No. 115-A.

In the meantime, Republic Act 11589 requires the BFP to establish and implement the BFP Modernization Program in collaboration with the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG Philippines) in order to improve the capacity of its staff and acquire cutting-edge fire prevention, fire suppression, fire investigation, and emergency medical and rescue services facilities and equipment.

A budget of PHP27.11 billion is allocated for the BFP by the 2023 GAA.
