The National Food Authority (NFA) will purchase palay (unhusked rice) from rice farmers in Tanauan, Leyte for PHP19 per kilogram, plus an additional PHP2 per kilogram.

According to Mayor Gina Merilo in an interview on Wednesday, the local government has allocated PHP2 million for the implementation of the Palay Marketing Assistance Program for Legislators and Local Government Units (PALLGU).

Merilo claimed that a memorandum of understanding to increase the price at which palay is purchased was signed on March 23 by the local government and the National Food Authority (NFA). Isagani Espada, a municipal councilor and the main advocate for the initiative was present when it was signed.

The PALLGU, which aimed to increase the productivity of the farmers in Eastern Visayas, was originally put into effect by the municipal administration of Tanauan.

“The program aims to offer our rice producers chances to enhance their income. We have a chance to help our nearby farmers here,” Merilo remarked.

According to a statement from Jasmin Lintag, regional manager of NFA Eastern Visayas, as part of the program, the local government enters into a marketing agreement with NFA and contributes a premium sum to be added to the current government-buying price of palay.

The local administration in Tanauan Town will raise the palay buying price, which is now PHP19 per kilogram, by PHP2.

We are pleased with the support given by the local government in NFA’s effort to increase our buffer stocks to be supplied only from local farmers, Lintag continued. “We warmly recognize the significance of the event,” he added.

The program is anticipated to help 1,000 local rice growers in Tanauan, a second-class town in the province of Leyte with 57,455 residents divided into 54 barangays (villages).
