Global technology giants have been urged to join the fight against disinformation by eight European nations.

In a joint letter, the prime ministers of Lithuania, Moldova, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Estonia, Latvia, Poland, and Ukraine stated that “(tech) platforms should address the growing threat to democracies posed by deep fakes and other AI-generated disinformation pieces, especially from hostile foreign actors.”

The letter written by Moldova stated that “foreign information manipulation and interference, including disinformation, is being deployed to destabilize our countries, weaken our democracies, to thwart Moldova and Ukraine’s accession to the European Union, and to weaken our support for Ukraine amid Russia’s aggression.”

It urged tech platforms to team up with “democratic governments and civil society and work together to defend the integrity of information and ensure the security of our societies,” stating that disinformation is one of the “most important and far-reaching weapons” of the “hostile actors.”
