A nuclear sword is “hanging over our heads,” according to China, as a result of Putin’s intention to deliver nuclear weapons to Belarus.
In response to Russia’s announcement that it will use tactical nuclear weapons, China has urged nations to back down from the verge of nuclear conflict.
Following Russia’s announcement to station tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus, China has issued a warning of a potential third world war.
China’s envoy at the UN, Geng Shuang, urged other superpowers to maintain “global strategic stability” by pulling back from the edge.
He pleaded with countries to avoid using nuclear weapons in Ukraine, armed attacks on nuclear power plants, and nuclear crises.
Shuang made it plain that China disagrees with the Kremlin’s intention to deliver nuclear weapons to Minsk while speaking at a Security Council session on international peace.
In his speech, he referred to nuclear weapons as “the sword of Damocles hanging over our heads” and urged all nuclear weapon states to take steps to lessen the possibility of nuclear war and prevent military conflict between nuclear weapon states.
We recommend that all nuclear weapons nations refrain from deploying nuclear weapons overseas and that any nuclear weapons that have already been deployed abroad be withdrawn, Shuang added.
A nuclear war cannot be won and should not be fought, said Shuang, adding that China’s position on nuclear weapons has been “clear and consistent,” and that “nuclear proliferation must be controlled and nuclear catastrophe averted.”
China is firmly committed to a defensive nuclear strategy, refraining from using or threatening to use nuclear weapons against nuclear-weapon-free governments or areas, as well as refraining from making a nuclear weapon’s first use at any point in time or under any circumstances.
Geng urged all parties to “remain rational, avoid escalating tensions, escalating frictions, or fanning the flames” without specifically addressing Russia.
China has asserted its neutrality in the conflict while simultaneously highlighting its “no-limits relationship with Russia.”
China called for a ceasefire and negotiations between Ukraine and Russia in a five-point peace proposal it unveiled last month to end the conflict.
“To the credit of the Chinese side, the Chinese side reminded Moscow in a very sensible manner that nuclear war cannot be won and fought, and that nuclear proliferation must be prevented,” said Sergiy Kyslytsya, the UN ambassador for Ukraine.
Additionally, he criticized Russia for going back on a promise it made to Chinese President Xi Jinping in a joint statement following their recent meeting in Moscow, which stated that all nuclear states should refrain from deploying nuclear weapons outside of their own countries and withdraw those that are already in place.
The deployment of tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus, which Russian President Vladimir Putin announced last week, was dubbed a “desperate Kremlin attempt to avert military defeat and scare the world with nuclear doom” by Ukraine.
The idea, according to Valentin Rybakov, the UN ambassador for Belarus, is a “response to the problems and vulnerabilities to national security” that his nation is facing.
That occurs the day after Alexander Lukashenko, the president of Belarus, indicated that Putin could use strategic nuclear weapons in Belarus if he feels threatened.
In a speech, Lukashenko claimed that Belarus’ nuclear arsenal would assist defend it from the West, which he claimed threatened Belarus.
“It is impossible to defeat a nuclear power,” he continued. If the Russian government realizes that the current circumstances could lead to Russia’s dissolution, it will employ the worst possible weapon. This is not acceptable.
