Strive for a safe Lenten break, Gen. Azurin
Gen. Rodolfo Azurin Jr., the head of the Philippine National Police (PNP), urged all of the force’s commanders on Sunday to strive for a zero-casualty observance as the nation enters Holy Week and while Ramadan is still in effect.
“Let’s all make sure that there are no unpleasant occurrences, particularly [with] the luggage or other property of travelers, at the airports and seaports. If you plan to take the bus, kindly check that the drivers are alert and in excellent health and that the buses are in good working order. Keep this Holy Week as secure and tranquil as possible “In a statement, Azurin stated.
“As we observe our holy week, let’s strive for zero casualties among our staff and the community we are serving and safeguarding, “Said he.
In order to safeguard the public’s safety and security during Holy Week, the PNP deployed 74,114 police personnel as part of its yearly “Ligtas SumVac (Summer Vacation) 2023” program.
A total of 38,387 officers from Assistance Hubs and Police Assistance Desks will be deployed through mobile and foot/beat patrol to help the public and quickly handle particular complaints.
For specific locations of confluence, such as main thoroughfares, transportation hubs, terminals, commercial districts, and houses of worship, an extra 39,504 officers will be deployed.
The PNP head also asked citizens to assist law enforcement and abide by safety regulations.
The goal of the police officers’ deployment, according to Azurin, is to give the public participating in the various religious festivities the highest amount of security protection.
In the meantime, in preparation for the influx of tourists and returning residents, Brig. Gen. Joel Doria, director of the Police Regional Office-Mimaropa, gave orders to all chiefs of police and unit commanders to increase visibility in tourist hotspots and other places of convergence in Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, and Palawan.
In a news release, Doria stated, “I have instructed all PNP unit commanders in the region to employ security measures and secure vital installations, tourist hotspots, transportation hubs, churches, and places of pilgrimage for the safety of the public and to ensure the peaceful observation of Holy Week.
