Both the Philippines and New Zealand have pledged to uphold a regional order based on norms and to modernize their armed forces to counter any present or future security challenges.

This was reinforced on March 29 when Department of National Defense (DND) chief Carlito Galvez Jr. received a visit from Peter Kell, the New Zealand ambassador to the Philippines.

Arsenio Andolong, a spokesman for the DND, said in a statement Monday night that “the two officials shared views on the common values and priorities of the Philippines and New Zealand, particularly in maintaining a rules-based order in the region and modernizing their respective armed forces to meet current and emerging security challenges.”

He continued by saying that both nations had also agreed to collaborate closely under the ASEAN Defense Ministers’ Meeting Plus.

Andolong reported that at the meeting Galvez underlined the Philippines’ appreciation for New Zealand’s assistance and support in the country’s response to the pandemic.

“The DND was invited by New Zealand to send a delegate to the Defense Policy Makers Course in May 2023, and Galvez expressed his gratitude for the invitation. Along these lines, it was also suggested that enhanced education and training exchanges be investigated between the two defense establishments “Added he.

Andolong claimed that both parties expressed their eagerness for the bilateral defense talks between the Philippines and New Zealand (BDT).

The BDT this year, which will be hosted by New Zealand, will give both parties the chance to talk about how to enhance their bilateral defense cooperation, he said.
