Filipinos are urged to work toward a more progressive, humanitarian society.
On Sunday, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. urged Filipinos to work together to build a society that is “humane, fair, and progressive.”
Marcos urged Filipinos to consider the sacrifices made by military heroes to preserve and restore the country’s freedom in his address commemorating Araw ng Kagitingan (Day of Valor).
“Let us also keep in mind that our actions today affect the destiny of our country, especially the subsequent generations,” he said. “As we remember the sacrifices of our forefathers who battled long and hard to defend our nation’s freedom.”
Together, let’s work to create a more compassionate, just, and forward-thinking society that enables our people to enjoy their freedom and realize their individual and collective dreams.
The heritage of our heroes and heroines came at a huge and costly cost, Marcos said, urging Filipinos to “re-examine” the principles and respect of our ancestors by “standing up against discrimination, offering help to those in need, and striving towards a better future.”
He also exhorted the populace to have the ability to make “intelligent and sound decisions” in order to solve our nation’s critical issues with empathy and consideration for others.
From the battles fought in the World War II trenches to the struggles against insurgent forces, Marcos claimed that the Philippines has encountered countless difficulties that have tried faith but revealed to the outside world the “indomitable spirit” of every Filipino.
Yet according to him, the nation has developed into one that “stands tall and proud,” governed by the values of “justice, truth, and democracy.”
As we constantly rise to confront any difficulty head-on with bravery, elegance, and drive, we have steadfastly demonstrated time and time again that we are never the same after each hardship.
The Fall of Bataan on April 9, 1942, and the valor displayed by American and Filipino soldiers against invading Japanese forces during World War II are commemorated annually on April 9 by the Day of Valor holiday.
The day also honors the Bataan Death March, during which many American and Filipino POWs were made to walk 112 kilometers from Mariveles, Bataan, to Capas, Tarlac, in the sweltering sun, without food or water for days.
In honor of Araw ng Kagitingan this year, Marcos designated April 10 as a non-working holiday.
In addition, the nation is commemorating Filipino Veterans Week (PVW), which this year runs from April 5 to 12.
“Kagitingan ng mga Beterano, Pundasyon ng Nagkakaisang Pilipino” is the PVW’s theme for this year.
The Philippine Veterans Affairs Office (PVAO), meanwhile, asked all Filipinos to mark “Araw ng Kagitingan” on Sunday with “a thankful heart and a compelling need to remember our predecessors for everything that they have done for us.”
Despite Bataan falling on April 9, our veterans persisted and showed an unbreakable spirit for 93 days of never-ending bombardment. They fought the invading adversaries with their heads held high despite the fact that their bodies were worn out and bleeding, according to a statement from PVAO administration Undersecretary Reynaldo Mapagu.
He asked all Filipinos to uphold the legacy of “our predecessors and continue the courage they have upheld in their fight for freedom and liberty” as the country remembers this pivotal day.
Amenah Pangandaman, secretary of the Department of Budget and Management (DBM), urged Filipinos to keep honoring and saluting the valiant nation’s defenders in a separate statement.
We owe them our deepest thanks and utmost respect today and always, she declared.
She urged Filipinos to never forget that on the first Day of Valor, they stood their ground and fought valiantly until the bitter end.
“May us forge togetherness and solidarity with one another toward nation-building in order to continue to commemorate the story of courage and extreme sacrifice put down 81 years ago,” she prayed.
Araw ng Kagitingan, according to House Speaker Martin Romualdez, serves as a reminder that Filipinos will always persevere in their fights, advance, and triumph together.
He stated, “Today, as we commemorate Araw ng Kagitingan around the nation, we salute and respect the heroism of our fallen heroes, who voluntarily laid down their lives so that we may benefit from the benefits of freedom today.
“We must never forget the sacrifices of Filipino resistance warriors who stood up against the might of foreign invaders in World War II, which gave the rest of our nation the motivation and strength to battle on,” he continued. “When we look back into the dark day that we call the “Fall of Bataan.”
Romualdez claimed that the nation’s struggle with the Covid-19 outbreak is evidence of the Filipino people’s resiliency.
He said, “We struggled, we fought, and we won. As long as we stick together and keep finding strength in the qualities of our heroes, he declared, “We will always win.”
“This day is a monument to Filipino bravery and tenacity, a fighting spirit that emerges as we overcome challenges one after another. This day serves as a reminder of a treasured legacy: “We carry in our veins the same heroism and bravery that our soldiers demonstrated in the bloody battle that was the Fall of Bataan.”
Amenah Pangandaman, the secretary of the Department of Budget and Management, meanwhile, urged Filipinos to keep honoring and praising the valiant nation’s defenders.
She stated in a statement that “we owe them our greatest thanks and highest respect today and always.” “May us forge unity and solidarity with one another as we work toward nation-building in order to remember the story of courage and extreme sacrifice laid down 81 years ago?”
