In February, PH unemployment remains at 4.8%.
The unemployment rate in February of this year was 4.8 percent, the same figure as in January, according to a report released on Tuesday by the Philippine Statistical Authority (PSA).
According to PSA National Statistician Undersecretary Dennis Mapa, the number of unemployed Filipinos rose by 102,000 from January’s 2.37 million to 2.47 million in February.
Mapa blamed the larger number of Filipinos who entered the labor field in February for the rise in the number of unemployed people.
1.55 million more Filipinos joined the labor force in February than in January, increasing the labor force participation rate to 66.6 percent from 64.6 percent.
Those who are at least 15 years old are considered to be in the workforce.
48.8 million members of this category, up 1.45 million from January, were reportedly employed in February according to Mapa.
Agriculture and forestry, which saw a 997,000 increase in workers month over month, was followed by construction (up 277,000), fishing and aquaculture (up 246,000), wholesale and retail trade (up 219,000), public administration and defense compulsory social security (up 213,000), and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (up 219,000).
According to Mapa, the underemployment rate fell from 14.1 percent in January to 12.9 percent in February.
Arsenio Balisacan, secretary of the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA), said in a separate statement that the job market has continued to exhibit strong performance.
The Filipino job market is constantly improving, according to the most recent data on the population, he said.
According to Balisacan, the government promises to provide more high-quality jobs for Filipinos in order to further strengthen the labor market in the nation.
A greater number of well-paying positions would be made possible by recent events, such as the nation’s ratification of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership and changes to the Public Service Act.
