Galvez envisions four ‘priority areas’ for modernizing the US-PH alliance.
Carlito Galvez Jr., the head of the Department of National Defense (DND), stated that the military partnership between the US and the Philippines has to be modernized in four areas.
After speaking with US Department of Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III on Wednesday (US time), shortly after the third 2+2 ministerial meeting between the US and the Philippines in Washington DC on Tuesday, he made this remark.
The first thing is that we require a shared understanding of our priorities and policies. We shall therefore have our defense guidelines. And improve our hardware to maintain the capabilities of our forces to react to threats,” Galvez said.
The second area, according to the DND leader, is the need for both countries’ cyber defenses to be enhanced in order to safeguard sensitive data and essential infrastructure.
“Number three is that we must collaborate more and share more intelligence as we face and address the difficulties. We also wish to express our gratitude for always giving us the highest attention. That is very helpful, the DND head said.
Fourth, Galvez emphasized the need for improvements in US and Philippine force interoperability in order to “better coordinate and conduct joint activities.”
“Today’s meeting is a good opportunity to build on our discussions during your visit to the Philippines last (February) and reaffirm our commitment to the Philippines-US Mutual Defense Treaty,” the official added.
Galvez added that the frequent communication and tight cooperation show how closely the two countries are linked in terms of defense.
The necessity of Philippine-US defense cooperation in the region, he continued, “especially at this time when significant challenges are becoming increasingly complex and evolving,” was something that he had previously brought up.
The DND chief emphasized that the defense partnership between the US and the Philippines is for peace.
In order to ensure the safety and security of our citizens, he continued, “Our defense alliance is essential, and we continue to collaborate to strengthen our capabilities to meet the current and future security challenges, including disasters.”
Galvez also used the occasion to highlight how grateful the Philippine government was for American assistance in limiting the oil spill in the province of Oriental Mindoro.
“I appreciate you very much. Mr. Secretary, the phone call we made, it came to pass right away, and we sincerely appreciate it since it made it much easier for us to control the oil spill we experienced. I think that when our Army was able to seal all 23 leaks that we had discovered with the ship when we arrived at Mindoro with the Coast Guard, they were overjoyed.
The US Navy has sent a remotely operated vehicle as part of its help, while the US Coast Guard and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration are providing technical assistance.
