A PHP125 million cold storage facility that would help Nueva Ecija’s onion producers has been finished and is expected to start soon.

A joint team from the Department of Agriculture (DA) and the Philippine Rural Development Project (PRDP) completed the final inspection of the onion cold storage facility in Palayan City, according to Crispulo Bautista Jr., regional director of the Department of Agriculture-Central Luzon (DA-3), on Friday.

According to Bautista, the 60,000-bag facility will allow more farmers in Nueva Ecija easier access to cold storage at a lesser cost and with more flexible payment options.

He stated in a statement that “this facility attempts to solve the restrictions found in the value chain analysis (VCA) of onions, namely the lack of post-harvest facilities to assist preserve the quality of onions and ultimately boost the profit of farmers.

Farmers frequently have to sell their produce for less than they would want to since there aren’t enough storage facilities.

Likewise, he stated that the cold storage will act as a collecting point where farmers will sort and pack onions harvested from nearby farms in boxes or bags.

The cold storage facility will be run by the Katipunan ng mga Samahang Magsisibuyas ng Nueva Ecija and is a project of the Infrastructure Development (I-BUILD) component of the DA-PRDP.

According to Bautista, the DA will build new cold storage facilities so that more farmers may store their product safety.

Cold storage is thought to increase the shelf life of onions by up to seven months, stop harvests from going bad before they should, and keep insects from infesting products.

The Caridad Sur Farmers Multi-Purpose Cooperative (CASFA) in Barangay Caridad Sur, Llanera Town, and Kalasag Primary Multi-Purpose Cooperative in Barangay San Agustin, San Jose City, both in Nueva Ecija, received cold onion storage facilities from the DA in March of last year.
