From January 1 to March 18 of this year, there were 1,015 leptospirosis cases nationally, up 188 percent from the 353 occurrences during the same time period in 2022.

Western Visayas had 212 instances, according to the Department of Health-Epidemiology Bureau (DOH-EB) surveillance data, which was the highest amount. It is followed by the Davao Region with 72 cases, the Zamboanga Peninsula with 87 cases, the Central Visayas with 89 cases, and the Cagayan Valley with 128 cases.

Additionally, data revealed that there were 85 leptospirosis-related deaths, compared to 50 for the same period last year.

Leptospirosis infections occur year-round, especially in areas that are flooded in floodwater, according to DOH officer in charge Maria Rosaria Vergeire, who spoke at a media event on Wednesday.

Vergeire recommended the public wear protective clothing like boots or plastic bags if walking through floodwater could not be avoided because the disease could be contracted via rats’ urine diluted in the floodwater.

If you have wounds in your feet and have soaked them in flood water, wash them thoroughly with soap and clean water, she advised. “Kung may sugat sa paa, balutin niyo po muna ‘yung sugat niyo, lagyan ng gamot at pagkatapos, pagkauwi niyo sa bahay,” she added.

She also suggested that anyone who had walked in floodwaters should visit a doctor as soon as leptospirosis symptoms appeared.

Leptospirosis symptoms include vomiting, stomach pain, chills, headache, high fever, muscle aches, and skin and eye yellowing.

“Ang leptospirosis po ay nakamamatay, sinisira po nito ang ating mga bato, eventually with a diagnosis of kumplikado, nagda-dialysis po ang ating mga pasiyente. When there are difficulties, the patient needs dialysis,” she noted.

Additionally, the general population is asked to maintain their surroundings tidy to prevent the presence of rats.
