Women now have “dignity and respect” because of digitalization: Romualdez

On Monday, Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez, speaker of the house, stressed the value of digital public infrastructure (PDI) in empowering women.

Romualdez said this after hearing philanthropist and proponent of women Melinda French Gates speak at the World Bank-International Monetary Fund (WB-IMF) Spring Meetings in Washington, D.C.

Melinda French Gates spoke about the value of the digital public infrastructure for empowering women. They have access to resources and opportunities thanks to DPI. They can participate in more activities since it accords them with respect and dignity, according to Romualdez.

French Gates’ comments “impressed and inspired” the representative of the first district of Leyte, who promised that Filipino women would not be left behind in the Marcos administration’s effort for the Philippines to adopt digital public infrastructure.

French Gates, who has written about women’s empowerment and is a proponent of boosting the proportion of female engineers in the workforce after witnessing firsthand how men predominate in the industry, according to Romualdez.

He stated, “French Gates’ sentiments ring true in that women are still underrepresented professionally in this day and age. If we want to build a society that is truly inclusive, we cannot keep ignoring this tragic circumstance. Fortunately, technology has the potential to be the great equalizer and put women on an even playing field with males in terms of job prospects, power, and influence.

Romualdez got the opportunity to talk with Nandan Nilekani, one of the founders of the giant Indian information technology business Infosys, while he was attending a lecture on DPI earlier.

Romualdez urged that the Philippines collaborate with the US and India to build a digital public infrastructure.

No one should be able to prevent women from playing important roles in this infrastructure. Once we have established this digital public infrastructure, we will make sure to ensure the empowerment of women in this area through the legislation, he stated.

In the House of Representatives, Romualdez has been a steadfast supporter of the women’s movement, awarding key positions to numerous female lawmakers.

“The empowerment of women has unquestionably benefited our group’s interests in the House of Representatives. It will make French Gates happy to see this reproduced in every workplace thanks to the flywheel of digitization, he remarked.

Digitalization, he has asserted, will “prove to be the panacea to the economic problems left behind by Covid-19.”

Building public digital platforms, according to him, “is very much aligned with the campaign promise of President Marcos to speed up the country’s digital transformation.”
