BI: New trafficking strategy involves faking religion in order to work overseas

Officers from the Travel Control and Enforcement Unit (TCEU) of the Bureau of Immigration (BI) recently detained two females at Terminal 3 of Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) who had pretended to be Muslims in order to travel and work abroad.

According to its report to Commissioner Norman Tansingco, the interception of two women, aged 36 and 37, as they tried to board a Cebu Pacific flight bound for Dubai at the NAIA last April 14 revealed the new method of human trafficking syndicates.

The two victims stated that they were Muslim pilgrims who intended to travel to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia via bus in order to perform Umrah. Both stated that they had recently converted to Islam and intended to stay in the Arab countries for seven days.

However, BI officers found a number of contradictions in their answers throughout the interrogation. They eventually acknowledged that their documents were fake, and a woman who handled their visas and tickets recruited them to work as domestic helpers via Facebook.

They both went on to say that in order to leave the nation, they had to pretend to be Muslims.

The inter-agency council against trafficking received the two to conduct additional research and begin legal proceedings against their recruiter.

The BI chief is dismayed to learn of the new strategy from dishonest organizations.

“These traffickers will do everything it takes to profit from their scheme. In a statement, the head of the BI alleged that they had even used religion as a cover to avoid immigration checks.

He cautioned potential overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) once more to deal solely with government organizations that are in charge of finding employment abroad.

Tansingco thanked the Legislative Executive Development Advisory Council (LEDAC) for designating the proposed immigration modernization law as a priority measure in the meanwhile.

He organized a focus group discussion (FGD) on April 13 in Manila to congratulate the Presidential Legislative Liaison Office (PLLO) for helping the new law be passed. Representatives from at least nine senators were also there to reconcile versions and speed up the bill’s adoption.

The director of the Bureau of Investigation (BI) is expecting that the measure will pass on third reading before President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.

Imagine, our laws existed before there were any international flights in the Philippines. Many of its provisions are already out-of-date and no longer relevant, he claimed.

Tansingco added, “On behalf of the BI employees, we also thank our legislators for guaranteeing that the utilization of income for the augmentation of employee pay remains. This would considerably benefit our staff members who are stuck on low pay, and it would also make it possible for us to hire recent graduates to work for the government. (
