Solons claim that a divorce bill will assist battered spouses in starting over.

For the sake of spouses who are domestic abuse victims or survivors, and after the House of Representatives already gave the bill “in principle” approval, the Senate must move quickly on the divorce law.

On Tuesday, a hearing was held by the Committee on Women, Children, Family Relations, and Gender Equality, which is presided over by Senator Risa Hontiveros.

She specifically mentioned women who require legal help to end their marriages.

“The spouses of several Filipino women have nearly killed them. However, the overwhelming majority of them are unable to dissolve their unions due to the high expenditures involved in doing so. Ating mga kababaihan ng pagkakataong makalaya sa masalimuot at abuse of pagsasama bigyan na natin. Bigyan naman sila ng kanilang opprotunity na mahalin at magmahal muli. Ipasa na ang (Let’s give them a chance to leave an unsatisfactory and difficult union. Give them the chance to love and be loved once more. Hontiveros stated in her opening address, “Let us pass the divorce bill.

“Once you recognize your error, the path to recovery shouldn’t be financially, psychologically, or socially traumatic for the typical married Filipino. Everyone of us deserves another opportunity at love and at life.

According to the Philippine Statistics Authority’s 2017 National Demographic and Health Survey, marital abuse, whether physical, sexual, or emotional, affects one in four married women between the ages of 15 and 49.

“When a marriage is broken, it is the State’s responsibility to not only give relief to the spouses, but also to shield the kids from the suffering, anxiety, and trauma of seeing routine marital arguments. Allowing Filipino families to end unhealthy partnerships is important, Hontiveros added.

She claimed that the House has been taking action to assist the nation in catching up with the rest of the globe.

The only two places in the world where divorce is prohibited are the Philippines and Vatican City.

“The Senate ought to follow suit. Previous polls have shown that the majority of Filipinos support legalizing divorce in the nation. Hontiveros advised, “We ought to pay attention to our people.

The next session will also be attended by anti-divorce activists, according to senators Raffy Tulfo and Robinhood Padilla.

In support of his claim, Padilla referenced his own personal experience, describing how he and his ex-wife, along with their kids, are now living happily together after agreeing to a civil separation.

In the kabanalan of the kasal, “Ang diborsyo” is not acceptable. Divorce, he remarked, is “pagtanggap sa realidad na walang anumang uri ng lunas ang kayang humilom sa ilang pagsasamang tuluyan nang nawasak at nasira” (Divorce is not a threat to the sanctity of marriage, but it is an acceptance of the truth that certain unions cannot be preserved).

Tulfo, on the other hand, bemoaned the drawn-out procedure and hefty cost of legal separation.

The Church Nullity Act of 2022 was adopted by the House Committee on Population and Family Relations in February, and it was sent to a technical working group tasked with creating a replacement bill.

Rep. Edcel Lagman of Albay’s 1st District claimed that the divorce law will provide partners—particularly wives—the choice to end a “irremediably broken marriage” and a fresh start.

“While it is true that marriages are celebrated in paradise, some unions actually end in divorce due of flaws and defects in people. According to a prior remark by Lagman, “The Divorce Act strives to deliver couples, especially the abused or abandoned spouses, from diabolical torment. (
