DOH: Oil and grease found in the waters off Puerto Galera
As oil and grease contamination has been discovered in many locations, the Department of Health (DOH) on Tuesday recommended the public avoid engaging in any work-related or recreational water activities in Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Administrative Order 2016-08, also known as the Water Quality Guidelines and General Effluent Standards of 2016, only nine out of 35 sample stations in the municipality and its barangays have satisfied the standards for water quality guidelines.
The finding “is not conclusively related” to the recent oil spill caused by a sunken ship off the waters of Naujan town in February, which had an impact on various places in Oriental Mindoro, according to DOH Officer in Charge Maria Rosario Vergeire on Tuesday.
“We are still coordinating with DENR on this,” she stated.
According to the test results made public on April 14, the Small Lalaguna and Big Lalaguna Shorelines, Balete, Central Sabang Shoreline, Coco Beach, Batangas Channel, Paniquian, Balatero, and West San Isidro Bay all met the quality standards for “oil and grease” impurities.
This is the fourth test they’ve conducted in the ports of Oriental Mindoro, including Puerto Galera. Every four to seven days, this is carried out, Vergeire stated in a public forum. “I was unable to pass the test on time, unfortunately. We no longer need to wait for additional tests because we have seen the correct results.
She said that high contamination levels of oil and typical grease could have negative consequences on the body.
The DOH added in a joint statement with the DENR that exposure to such chemicals may result in blisters and rashes as well as aspiration, which can lead to respiratory disorders.
Abdominal discomfort, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea are some of the acute symptoms of gastrointestinal irritations that can result from consuming polluted water.
The DOH urged the public to abstain from eating water from the impacted areas in addition to conducting aquatic activities.
The DENR’s water quality criteria should be followed by local government entities and water service providers in the area when conducting their own water quality monitoring.
