The PHP38 million modular steel flyover, which was previously known as the Gapan-San Fernando-Olongapo Road, was reopened by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) on Tuesday in San Fernando City, Pampanga.

The Lazatin steel flyover was given one last safety inspection by DPWH Senior Undersecretary Emil Sadain before it was reopened to only light vehicles, meaning those with a weight limit of 20 tons and a vertical clearance of 2.75 meters or less.

Traffic on the flyover was stopped on February 11, 2023. It was disassembled so that the 45 prefabricated segmental slabs that had deteriorated from the passage of crowded cars could be replaced.

According to a statement from Sadain, “It is high time the law against overloading is strictly enforced as it prematurely deteriorates our roads and bridges, including flyovers, and puts the safety of other motorists in jeopardy.”

He claimed that in order to increase the flyover’s useful life, buses, trucks, and other large vehicles are not allowed to utilize it.

To strictly enforce the use of light vehicles only, an overhead gantry with solar lights was erected on both approaches of the overpass.

Sadain claimed that prefabricated segmental slabs or composite girders with asphalt were used to rebuild the flyover more quickly.

A two-lane, 7.5-meter wide, and 195 linear-meter long modular steel flyover, the Lazatin flyover will relieve traffic congestion at the intersection of Lazatin Avenue and Jose Abad Santos Avenue and open a route from San Fernando City to Bataan, Zambales, and vice versa.

Prior to the intended opening date of May 31, 2023, its renovation was finished.
