On Wednesday, the Ilocos Norte province’s National Food Authority (NFA) declared that it had begun purchasing palay (unhusked rice) from local farmers here for PHP19 per kilogram.

According to Jonathan Corpuz, provincial manager of NFA-Ilocos Norte, the ongoing palay procurement aims to maintain a sufficient supply in the area and provide farmers with a market for their products.

The NFA buying station in Ilocos Norte is situated in Barangay 2, Sta. Joaquina.

Farmers are urged to present their “basic sectors in agriculture” stubs for verification and as proof of their registration in the system while selling their palay to any of the NFA buying stations.

The National Food Authority (NFA), an office of the president-affiliated organization, is tasked with ensuring national food security and stabilizing the supply and costs of staple grains for both farmers and consumers.

In addition to stabilizing farm-gate prices, the food agency purchases palay from farmers to increase its stockpile.

“We have 34,145 bags of rice and 40,277 bags of palay stored in our warehouses in Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, and Abra,” added Corpuz.

In the meantime, the NFA has begun providing the province’s government workers with its one-time rice support.

The National Food aid Program (NFA) has received funding from the Department of Budget and Management for the purpose of providing qualified federal employees with a one-time rice aid. A cavan weighing 50 kg is allowed for each recipient.
