Importing rice is still a possibility for relief and emergency operations.
On Wednesday, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. stated that the administration is considering the possibility of importing rice to supplement domestic production in the event of natural disasters like typhoons and the El Nino weather phenomena.
Marcos, however, reassured that there is a sufficient supply of the basic grain in the nation to maintain market prices steady.
He also ruled out the likelihood that the rice crisis would recur in 2018.
Therefore, we are waiting to see what the output levels will be following the final planting season before the harvest, for the future harvest, and will be. At a gathering in San Jose del Monte City, Marcos spoke to the media.
So that is what we are looking at, ‘yun ang tinitingnan natin. We could need to import. Therefore, he continued, “We’re keeping that option open.
The Covid-19 lockdowns, which impeded the operations of the majority of the industries, according to the President, had depleted the National Food Authority’s (NFA) buffer stock.
Marcos claimed that because the NFA is only permitted to purchase from local farmers, the government is attempting to find a way to increase its buffer stock without driving up the price of rice during harvest.
According to the Department of Agriculture’s (DA) supply projection for 2023, the nation’s total supply is anticipated to be 16.98 million metric tons (MMT), which is enough to meet the demand for this year, which is predicted to be 15.29 MMT.
Instead of the optimum 90-day buffer stock to stabilize the price of rice, the country would wind up with an ending balance of 1.69 MMT, or 45 days of buffer stock, a DA briefer stated.

In San Jose del Monte City, Bulacan, Marcos opened a second Kadiwa ng Pangulo Program outlet in order to offer consumers affordable agri-fishery products and a ready market for farmers and fishermen.
Marcos wants to use the initiative as a platform to increase the number of income prospects for farmers, fisherfolk, and micro, small, and medium-sized businesses (MSMEs) while also managing food inflation at the local level.
“We are doing everything we can to open more Kadiwa stores so that it could reach even the most remote areas and every Filipino could at least feel a little relief as the prices of basic goods go down,” he said. “We are trying our best to expand our Kadiwa stores so that they could even reach the farthest areas.”
Additionally, the President granted Bulacan province’s numerous farmers’ cooperatives and associations (FCAs) interventions totaling PHP15.793 million.
The Department of Agriculture (DA)-National Rice Program awarded PHP5 million to the Dulong Bayan Farmers Association, situated in San Jose Del Monte City, for the construction of a warehouse with a mechanical grain drier. Additionally, it got PHP 5.5 million from the DA-National Livestock Program for the execution of INSPIRE, the Integrated National Swine Production Initiatives for Recovery and Expansion.
On the other hand, the DA-Philippine Center for Postharvest Development and Mechanization gave a rice combine harvester valued at PHP1.764 million to the Biyaya ng Matangtubig Irrigators Association, Inc. of Baliuag town, the Sta. Catalina Matanda Bata Irrigators Association of San Ildefonso, and the Magmarale Farmers Field School Marketing Cooperative of San Miguel.
