Government agencies and CDO Business Group collaborate to produce agricultural goods.
Together with two government organizations, the Cagayan de Oro Chamber of Commerce and Industry Foundation (Oro Chamber) is working to expand agricultural products as a possible source of profitable company capital.
Ray Talimio Jr., president of the Oro Chamber, said in a statement on Friday that the group collaborated with the Departments of Trade and Industry and Science and Technology to innovate crop production.
“We just want to maximize the utilization of our homegrown agricultural products into something productive and useful to end users,” the man stated.
Oro Chamber has identified seven crops as potential targets for innovation, known as the “7-Cs” (coconut, coffee, cacao, cashew, maize, cassava, and calamansi).
The most commercially viable by-product of the coconut, according to Talimio, is “buko” juice, which is currently shipped to Europe and the US while residential furniture built of coco-lumber is in high demand due to its durability.
Alfonso Alamban, a former director of DOST-Region 10 (Northern Mindanao), who now works for the chamber as a consultant and resource, claimed that they are currently concentrating on methods for labeling, packing, and processing the by-products.
With this in mind, the Oro Chamber plans to host the 7-C’s Convention here in October, with a pocket forum for coffee innovation in June, cacao and calamansi in July, and corn, cassava, and calamansi in August.
The chamber announced that a special seminar on improvements for coconut byproducts will be held in October in preparation for the celebration of Small Business Month.
