Even though Negros Oriental is experiencing a hot and dry season, the Provincial Agriculture Office (PAO) is preparing for a potential El Nino event this year.

Emmanuel Caduyac, the province chief of PAO-Negros Oriental, stated on Friday that his agency has not yet received any reports of crops being harmed by the intense heat.

In an interview, he stated that “rice, corn, vegetables, and other crops are still flourishing even with the lack of rain in recent weeks.”

In accordance with comments from farmers in the countryside, he also said that there is still enough water for irrigation.

He stated that the National Irrigation Administration in this location also has a plentiful supply of water feeding the farmlands.

Even if a dry spell may be on the horizon, Caduyac believes that the current good weather will last throughout the next months.

PAO is now drafting countermeasures against the odd weather trend, but they are still awaiting direction from the Department of Agriculture.

Increased knowledge among farmers is essential to preventing substantial production losses, he said.

By the third quarter of the year, El Nino is expected to take the place of the present mild weather trend, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration.
