According to the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPH), accessibility and simpler processing will contribute to an increase in intellectual property (IP) registrations in 2022.

IPOPH Deputy Director General Ann Claire Cabochan also attributed the growth to greater public awareness and the enactment of laws that reward Filipinos’ innovation in a public briefing on Wednesday.

We now have a greater understanding of our ability to register what is known as our mental resources, according to Cabochan. “I think it is also a result of this awareness,” he added.

According to a previous report from the IPOPHL, 48,259 registrations of intellectual property were registered in 2022, up 3.7 percent from 46,558 applications in 2021.

Among the most common IP applications submitted at their office, according to Cabochan, are those for patents, which are the most numerous, utility models, industrial designs, and trademarks used primarily by enterprises.

She stated that IPOPH plans to expand the number of IPs registered in the upcoming years.

With the aid of its partners in the commercial sector and numerous educational institutions, the IPOPH is boosting its information and education campaign, according to Cabochan.

To encourage young people to register their ideas, they also hold online webinars.

In the meantime, the IPOPH will honor and present awards to Filipinos who they describe as “trailblazers on intellectual property” through its “Gawad Yamang Isip” program.

Three of them are fashion designers that produced wearable collections utilizing materials from the Philippines.
