‘Outlines’ the talking points from the Biden-Marcos press conference

According to a senior US administration official, the US will support the Philippine Armed Forces’ modernization program by considerably boosting its marine and tactical capability.

The senior administration official stated that this is one of several steps that will strengthen the alliance between the US and the Philippines as President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with US President Joe Biden, according to a transcript of the press call released by the White House (WH) on Monday.

Among the US attempts to support AFP modernization, according to a senior Biden administration source, are the transfer of three C-130 planes subject to consultation with Congress and several Cyclone-class coastal patrol vessels that “are on their way to the Philippines right now.”

The senior administration official stated, “We’re looking forward to introducing a new set of bilateral defense principles to expand our alliance collaboration and interoperability across operational domains, including land, sea, air, space, and cyberspace.

The official stated that identifying new places covered by the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement is another anticipated result of the sessions.

“This will improve Philippine security and advance the modernization objectives of the Armed Forces of the Philippines. Additionally, the official said that it would encourage US investment in local communities all over the Philippines and strengthen our ability to deliver humanitarian aid and disaster relief quickly.

According to the official, a presidential trade and investment mission will visit the Philippines to strengthen US business investments in the nation’s innovation economy, clean energy transition, vital mineral sector, and people’s food security.

Subject to congressional permission, the official stated that the US and the Philippines would co-host the sixth annual Indo-Pacific Business Forum in Manila.

The senior administration official stated, “This is the US’s premier annual commercial event in the region, and we think it’s very appropriate it will be in the Philippines next.”

The US Trade and Development Agency is also planning to begin new sustainable infrastructure projects in the Philippines that will use more than $3 billion in public and private funding to improve the country’s vital mineral supply chains, advance clean energy and smart grid technologies, encourage the deployment of 5G, improve airport and maritime safety, and support healthcare infrastructure.

On Sunday, Marcos began a five-day official visit to Washington, D.C., to reiterate the unique bond between the US and the Philippines.

The PR 001 jet carrying Marcos and his official delegation landed at Joint Base Andrews at 4:55 p.m., according to the Presidential Communications Office (PCO). Sunday 4:55 a.m. Philippine time (4:55 a.m. Washington D.C. time).

During his working visit, Marcos promised to advance the administration’s economic priorities, particularly in agriculture, power, infrastructure, and new technologies, in addition to deepening diplomatic connections with the US.

“That’s on the economic level; on the political level, the connection between the Philippines and the United States will still be essential… Again on the economic front, we will need to meet in-depth with many of the major corporations we missed on our previous trips—those to New York and Davos, respectively—and go into further detail with them, Marcos stated in a media interview.

In addition, Marcos discussed strengthening the ASEAN’s position in the international conversation and maintaining peace in the Indo-Pacific area despite global concerns.

The Philippine President will first meet with Biden, followed by a longer meeting with important Cabinet members.

He will also meet with lawmakers, significant US businesses, and business associations.
