The United States’ desire to collaborate with the Philippine government “as an equal, sovereign partner” was praised by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Wednesday. He also noted that defense and security involvement continues to be a major tenet of Philippines-US bilateral ties.

Marcos made the comment while meeting on Capitol Hill with senators from the US Senate, including the head of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Robert Menendez.

Marcos argued that interactions between Manila and Washington should extend to the legislative branch as well as the executive branch.

The topics covered during the discussion between Marcos and the US Senate members were security, defense, agriculture, reducing global warming, economic cooperation, and cyber security.

The supply chain, health and security in the health care system, the environment, energy security, and interconnectedness are further areas of collaboration between the two nations that need to be enhanced, according to Marcos.

The meeting was a component of the President’s ongoing five-day official visit to Washington, D.C., which also featured a number of high-level discussions with US Vice President Kamala Harris and US President Joseph Biden.

Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez, Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique A. Manalo, Philippine Ambassador to the United States Jose Manuel G. Romualdez, Finance Secretary Benjamin Diokno, Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin C. Remulla, and Trade Secretary Alfredo Pascual attended the President’s meeting on Capitol Hill on Wednesday.

Senator James Risch and other members of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations were among those who joined Menendez.
