After President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s trip to the US, a meeting with the Chinese government to discuss bilateral relations should be anticipated, a University of the Philippines professor said on Saturday.

Dr. Chester Cabalza stated at the Saturday News Forum that “we know that after our president returns home from the US, United Kingdom, and Indonesia, because of the ASEAN summit, China will also talk to Malacaang to discuss their relationship with us.”

We know that the US and China compete fiercely, so I’m sure that China has something in store for us, he added.

When questioned about whether the meeting with the US administration will make China less aggressive at the Ayungin Shoal, Cabalza responded, “That’s what we’ll be waiting (for) from China. They have consistently provided us with communication channels, and since 2017, the Coast Guard has made this approach.

He continued that we are working hard to maintain good relations with China so that action ought to come from China.

Marcos’ trip to the US has just come to an end. He is now in the United Kingdom for King Charles III’s coronation, and before traveling back to the Philippines, he will attend the 42nd ASEAN Summit in Indonesia.
