Flag ceremonies in Iloilo City are postponed until the end of May.

In light of the health concerns of the staff members who will be subjected to the intense heat of the sun and required to endure prolonged standing, the city government in this location has suspended the holding of flag ceremonies this month.

In a follow-up interview on Thursday, Mayor of Iloilo City Jerry P. Treas said, “(After May), the flag will still be raised every Monday and there will be a singing of the national anthem, but it should be not like before.”

The flag ceremony at city hall begins at 8 a.m. and is typically followed by a brief program that serves as a forum for, among other things, the celebration of accomplishments by city employees and a number of announcements.

On May 8, a female employee who had been watching the flag ceremony when passed out due to an increase in blood sugar.

β€œIf that can happen to a 29-year-old, what can happen to more senior members of the city?” the mayor pointed out, adding that for him, the health of employees is crucial.

Following discussions with the Civil Service Commission (CSC), Treas issued Executive Order 56 in May, which only allowed for a temporary suspension.

In the order, he said the heat index in Iloilo City, as computed by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Service Administration (PAGASA), does not fall below 40 degrees Celsius, which is classified to be β€œdanger” level that may bring about heat cramps and exhaustion that could lead to heat stroke.
